The records consist of materials collected by John B. Lovis for the writing of his book on the history of Sparrows Point, plus original Bethlehem Steel and steel industry documents from his tenure in Bethlehem's Corporate Planning Department. The Sparrows Point items include financial and operating statistics, company publications, and originals and photocopies of non-company publications dealing with the history of the plant and town. Bethlehem Steel documents include operating and inventory plans; two volumes of facility specifications and operating parameters (1980s) for the five Bethlehem integrated steel plants at Bethlehem, Johnstown, and Steelton, Pa., Burns Harbor, Indiana, and Sparrows Point, Md.; and letters from management to employees during the period of decline and bankruptcy. Of particular note is a file on estimated U.S. steel industry shipments and raw steel capacity by plant and by product (1985).

John B. Lovis was born on January 9, 1935, at Rahway, N.J., and grew up in Winchester and Lexington, Mass. He graduated from Norwich University in Northfield, Vt., with a B.S. in Engineering Management in 1956. Immediately after graduation he joined the Bethlehem Steel Corporation and was assigned to the Blast Furnace Department at Sparrows Point, Md. The Lackawanna Iron and Coal Company, formed in Pennsylvania during the 1840's moved to a West Seneca, N.Y. site in 1899. Steelmaking began in 1903 and by 1909 the City of Lackawanna had been established around the steel plant. Purchased by Bethlehem Steel in 1922, the facility expanded until employment reached over 20,000 in the mid - 1950's. Decline in the 1970's led to the closing of the Lackawanna Plant in 1983.
